You may be familiar with the fact that Australia allows the slaughter of horses for use in dog food sold within Australia…
But did you know Australia allows horses to be slaughtered for human consumption?
Horse meat produced within Australia for human consumption is exported to Japan and the EU.
It’s important to note that these are NOT horses raised specifically for meat.
The horses Australia slaughters include discarded racehorses (known in the racing industry as “wastage), as well as pet horses, rodeo horses, sport horses and Brumbies.
MERAMIST NOT SLAUGHTERING HORSES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION?
Meramist Abattoir is NOT currently slaughtering horses for human consumption. We are NOT convinced this is permanent.
We’re hearing rumours that the business has been sold and that the intention is moving forward that cattle will be slaughtered.
PLEASE NOTE we stated this is a RUMOUR, we are of course hopeful that it is true that horses are to no longer be slaughtered but we do NOT know for sure.
We will update the site as soon as we know more.

What we do know is that even IF Meramist is no longer going to be slaughtering horses for human consumption — there are 30+ knackeries in Australia slaughtering horses for pet/dog food and…
We will NOT stop our advocacy efforts until the barbaric practice of slaughtering horses within Australia for human consumption — OR any other purpose is banned.

HORSE MEAT PRODUCED IN AUSTRALIA IS TOXIC
Any horse owner will tell you, because horses slaughtered in Australia have not been specifically raised for meat, they will more than likely have been treated with drugs including, but not limited to, wormers and Phenylbutazone AKA Bute.
As example, in the equine world, BUTE is almost an everyday go-to anti-inflammatory and painkiller.
Oh and be sure to ask your horse owning friends how often they worm their horses. (Usually at least 2 times per year.)
These and other drugs legally used on pet, race, rodeo, sport and other horses that end up slaughtered for human consumption are clearly marked as NOT for use on any animal entering the human food chain.
Add in the fact that a high percentage of the horses slaughtered in Australia are discarded racehorses.
Again, in the racing industry, unwanted, discarded horses are cruelly known as “wastage“.
Keeping in mind that in the horse racing industry there are many known cases of illegal performance-enhancing drugs, including cocaine — being used on horses…
And it’s not hard to understand how and why Australian horse meat is toxic.
ONLY 1 out of a possible 2,500 horses’ owners is randomly called to double-check that the horse being slaughtered was not recently treated with drugs (such as “bute”) that are not meant for human consumption.
It turns out that the testing regime of horsemeat in Australia tests 10 samples a year.
Yes, ONLY 10 samples out of 10,000 horses are tested for Phenylbutazone each year.
In other words, the safety of horse meat produced in Australia rests largely on the honour system.
WHY DO PEOPLE FEEL SO STRONGLY ABOUT HORSE SLAUGHTER?
There is a relationship of trust.
Horses are sentient beings who experience a full range of emotions including sadness, loss, fear as well as happiness, joy and curiosity.
THE MAJORITY OF AUSTRALIANS FIND HORSE SLAUGHTER UNACCEPTABLE & A COMPLETE BETRAYAL OF TRUST
HORSES ARE NOT BRED TO BE SLAUGHTERED…
And they do not get the same legislative protection as other animals.
Their flight instinct is greater than other animals and they have more physical capacity to cause harm to both themselves and each other when in stressful situations.
WE HAVE SEEN HORSES SHAKE IN FEAR…
As they are beaten and whipped and forced onto the dogger’s cattle trailers.
We have seen unwanted horses dropped off at the dogger’s yards because uncaring owners won’t take responsibility for giving them a humane end.
WE HAVE SEEN HORSES STARVING…
In the meat men’s AKA doggers‘ holding “facilities”.
We have seen horses chew on bale netting because they have no food or water.
We have seen them held in scorching heat without shelter.
We have seen them forced onto leg-breaking B double cattle trailers and road trains.
WE HAVE SEEN THEM HAULED FOR 30 HOURS, WITHOUT A BREAK, WITHOUT BEING FED OR WATERED…
We’ve seen horses hauled on the hottest of days, with the sun beating down on the trailers.
Again, without food or water for 30 or more hours.

Undercover investigations in Australia have shown the horrendous animal welfare conditions in the EU-approved Meramist slaughterhouse. We know this 2-minute video is hard to watch but we’re hoping that not everyone will turn away.
The majority of these horses had positive interactions with people and developed an understanding of humans as caregivers and providers.
The majority sought help from fear and pain from humans, and now at their demise, they realise that these humans do not care about them and are about to kill them. Try as they might, there is no escape.
We need to see this brutality come to an end!
